Heal your "parts" with IFS therapy
IFS Therapy in San Francisco
Have you ever faced a dilemma where you said something like…
PART OF ME WANTS X, BUT ANOTHER PART OF ME WANTS Y.
Well, in Internal Family Systems therapy, we work from the basic understanding that all of us are born with parts—and that having parts is a very normal and healthy part of every person.
The problem is, especially when there is trauma, a part of us is often forced into an extreme role…
…forced to become the “parentified child”...
…forced to be the one in charge…
…forced to be small and helpless…
…forced to be the one to quickly “extinguish” intense feelings through drugs or alcohol…
And yet, IFS also holds that every part has a good intention and every part has value, even for trauma survivors.
As an internal system, your parts are at odds with each other, much like the members of “family” may be at odds with each other.
Typically, according to IFS, people’s parts fall into one of two categories:
Wounded parts (the “exiles”).
Protective parts (the “managers” and “firefighters”).
And all of these parts are governed by the “Self” with a capital “S.”
Luckily, the Self cannot be damaged, and it knows inherently how to heal. The Self is characterized by the “8 C’s”:
Confidence.
Calm.
Compassion.
Courage.
Creativity.
Clarity.
Curiosity.
Connectedness.
Founder Dr. Richard Schwartz explains IFS:
What does a typical IFS session look like?
Initially, we’ll work together to identify your specific parts. We’ll carefully explore each one, hear what it has to say, and give it a name. Some common questions I may ask you when getting to know a part:
1.
“Where is it in your body?”
2.
“Do you see it, feel it, hear it?”
3.
“What is your relationship to this part?”
4.
“How do you feel toward it?”
Then, we’ll seek to more fully understand the relationship between your parts, and where there are opportunities for healing between them.
In IFS, we often facilitate the exploration of your parts and their relationships using relaxation and guided imagery exercises, similar to that of a mindfulness practice.
IFS holds that each person has the inherent potential to generate healing and repair between their parts, with the guidance and facilitation of the therapist. It is this relational repair, and in particular the “unblending” of these parts, that leads to lasting change and true healing from trauma.
One way that IFS is different from other models such as psychodynamics is that IFS emphasizes the relationship between your parts rather than the relationship between the therapist and client as the vehicle for healing.
IFS therapy is considered “evidence-based” and can be highly effective with a number of issues including:
Trauma (childhood trauma, abuse, neglect, violence, etc.)
Anxiety
Depression
Addiction
Relationship issues

What is Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS)?
Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) is a highly effective therapeutic approach that focuses on healing and integrating the various parts of the self. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS recognizes that within each of us, there exists a complex internal system of different parts or sub-personalities. These parts are responsible for our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
Understanding the basic principles of IFS
At the core of IFS is the belief that every individual has a core Self, which is inherently calm, compassionate, and wise. The Self is the true essence of who we are, and it is from this place that healing and transformation can occur. The goal of IFS therapy is to help individuals connect with their Self and establish a harmonious relationship with their various parts.
The history and development of IFS
The Internal Family Systems Therapy model was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Richard Schwartz, a renowned family therapist. Dr. Schwartz recognized that traditional therapeutic approaches often failed to address the complexity and multiplicity of the human psyche. Inspired by his own personal experiences, as well as his work with clients, he developed the IFS model as a way to navigate the inner landscape of the mind and promote healing.
The core concepts of IFS
IFS operates on the principle that every part of the self has a positive intention. These parts can be categorized into two main groups: the exiles and the protectors. The exiles are the wounded parts that hold pain, trauma, and unresolved emotions. The protectors, on the other hand, are the parts that try to keep the individual safe by managing and controlling the exiles.
How IFS is used in therapy sessions
In an IFS therapy session, the therapist creates a safe and non-judgmental space for the client to explore their inner world. Through guided visualization and dialogue, the client is encouraged to identify and communicate with their different parts. The therapist helps the client to understand the roles and functions of each part, and to develop a compassionate relationship with them.
The process of IFS involves acknowledging, listening to, and understanding the needs and concerns of each part. By fostering compassionate communication between these parts, the therapist helps the client to access their Self, which is the key to healing and transformation.
